Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
