Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on poker.

The actual improvement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
