The primary reason why Mr. Ungar switched from gin to poker was that he was a tiny bit too good at it. So skilled in fact, that no player could stand up to him. Even the commonly called professionals who were supposed to be the greatest at gin were crushed when they played against Stu. One of these gin rummy player was Harry Stein, called, "Yonkie". Harry Stein was handed such a humiliating defeat at the hands of stu that he allegedly stopped playing it professionally and never showed up at a gin tournament.
Certainly, with a image like that it was not long before gamblers became weary of betting against mr. ungar. He could not find any matches and in his desperation he started doing something no one had performed before. Stu offered starting handicaps to likely opposing players in the wish that they might compete opposed to him if they thought they held an edge. He at will began from a bad arrangement and one account has it that he even played with a constant bad egg. The same trend followed Stu Ungar to sin city. He won so often that the casinos began asking him not to play in their rooms anymore. The reason for it was that other poker room clients refused to sit at the table if he were seated.
Stu Ungar is remembered more for his accomplishments in hold’em poker but he himself always said that he was a whole lot better at gin rummy.
He defeated Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in Nineteen Eighty to become the youngest world champion. Due to his looks that made him seem far younger than he was, he got the nickname, "The Kid".
